Confidential Document Shredding FAQs
DIN levels, what are they and what do they mean?
DIN levels are the industry standards used to judge how well a shredder shreds paper. There are 7 security levels for paper shredding, ranging from 1 to 7, which simply means the higher the number, the smaller the pieces of paper are shredded into.
Paper security levels are indicated by the letter “P” with a number after, indicating the level. For example, P-1 is the lowest level and P-7 the highest. The higher the security level, the more difficult it is to reconstruct the information.
Can you explain the differences between your DIN level 3, 4 and 5 services?
DIN level 3 is an entry-level security standard, cross-cutting paper into 320mm² pieces. More secure than strip cut, it turns a typical A4 sheet into 194 particles versus level 2 strip cutting, which is 35 strips. It’s suitable for personal data, such as those with address details.
DIN level 4 is a higher security standard that crosscuts paper into no bigger than 160mm². This shreds a sheet of A4 paper into 389 particles. This level is ideal for shredding sensitive documents containing personal and financial information, such as payslips and contracts.
DIN level 5 is ultra-secure, micro cross-cutting paper into 30mm² pieces. This shreds a single A4 sheet of paper into 2,079 particles. Reconstitution is impossible, making it ideal for highly secretive and sensitive environments such as medical records.
How much can I fill a pre-paid shredding bag up to?
Our pre-paid bags can be filled up to a maximum weight of 10kg. All bags are weighed on return. We offer a +10% variation to this weight; thus, weights above 11 Kilos will be subject to excess weight charges as follows: 60p per kilo (DIN P-3), 70p per kilo (DIN P-4) and 80p per kilo (DIN P-5). If these additional charges are incurred, they will require payment in full before shredding/destruction commences.
Are your confidential document shredding services subject to contracts?
No. All our shredding services are contract-free to help all our customers enjoy a flexible, ad-hoc service that works for them. Use us as little or as often as you like with no hidden costs, charges or penalties.
What can I include and not include in my shredding?
Our helpful guide (included with all shredding bag orders or downloadable here) explains what we can and cannot accept for shredding.
If items we cannot shred are found, we apply a contamination charge to correctly dispose of this material. Please refer to our guide for more information and charges.
Can I see my shredding being shredded/destroyed?
To ensure the highest levels of security on our premises, we do not permit customers to enter the secure part of our facility where shredding is carried out. Please rest assured that all materials received for shredding are processed the same day before the end of business.
Is it easy to arrange a drop-off or a collection?
Yes. We have an easy-to-use online booking form. Pop your details in, along with your preferred drop-off/collection date, and we’ll be in touch to confirm everything.
Where do you collect from, and what is the charge?
Our collection service runs across Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Northampton. Plus, we now cover Sandbach, Congleton and Crewe. Our collections are charged at £15.00 ex. VAT per collection required. This is in addition to your chosen shredding service costs.
How do I pay for my confidential document shredding?
If you buy our shredding bags online, simply check out with a credit or debit card. If you are using our cost per kilo service, we accept debit and credit card payments on site, which include Visa, Mastercard and American Express. You can also pay in cash as well.
Do you destroy CDs and DVDs?
Yes. If you keep these items separate from your paper shredding, we can shred them using our dedicated disk shredder, which cuts them into small pieces just like your documents. This also includes old debit, credit and loyalty cards, so please keep those separate too.
Can I include hardback books in my confidential document shredding?
Yes. We shred hardback books such as diaries and notebooks. This does not include ring binders or lever-arch folders – please take your documents out of those. For more details on what we can and cannot shred, check out our handy guide here.
